The department has been running four semester Industrial oriented M. Tech. courses in two streams:
| |
| |
Extractive Metallurgy of Iron & Steel. |
Foundry Technology. |
| |

These courses have been started in early sixties after the approval of Govt of India, New Delhi with a basic aim to cater the need of industries, research organization, etc. This course is open to candidates having Bachelors degree in Engineering (Metallurgy) or any equivalent degree recognized by University and any other professional bodies approved by Govt. of India.
Each semester is of six months duration. The first semester covers the general and basic papers of Metallurgy and material science in particular alongwith eight weeks training in industries. The second semester offers the specialized papers in the area of Iron Making, Energy Conservation, Solidification, and Casting Technology, etc.
These two semester teachings give the strong background and base for solid preparation for the research based thesis. The entire third semester is devoted for industrial training so that the students can get good exposure of the industries, which helps them in selecting the project topic for their thesis work. Thus, these M.Tech. courses provide the wide scope of teaming of students in the field of Ferrous Production Technology and Metal Casting Technology. Practical and Industrial training provide the students elaborate exposures to Research and Development activities in the plants, which make them competent to solve the problems of industries.
Expert from Tate Steel, N. M. L, Jamshedpur, Tata Motors, Usha Martin Industries Ltd. are also helping the department as adjunct faculty to make this course interesting and attractive. Their contribution has been the source of strength, inspiration and sustenance of the course since its inception.
The students obtaining the degree find prospective openings in reputed industries and research organizations such as BARC, ISRO, NML, R&D SAIL, Tata Steel, SAIL Plants, Vijayanagar Steel, Mini Steel Industries, RRL Bhubaneshwar, IITs, etc. |

Mechanical engineering department has been running a four semester M. Tech programme in Computer Integrated Design and Manufacturing since 1990 with a view to impart updated technical education to mechanical engineering graduates who can successfully shoulder the technical challenges of the nation.
Technology for product development with zero defects is the need of the day. Our M.Tech programme is an attempt to focus on the techniques required in the process of product development of zero tolerance and zero defects. The course covers design, manufacturing, optimization, and management. During the first two semesters, theoretical knowledge of the advanced subjects are given through course, work and during the last two semesters the students have to do project work in the department/ nearby reputed industries/ research and development organizations like Tata Steel, Tata Engineering, Tata Power, Tata Cummins, Timken India, Usha Martin, Usha Beltron, NML Jamshedpur, etc. where students acquire first hand exposure to advanced technologies under working condition. We have a separate CAD Laboratory in the department for M. Tech students besides a central Computer centre. The institute is going to setup a CAD/CAM laboratory as a central facility in the near future where all latest tools for analytical solutions will be available. |

The department offers a unique four semester interdisciplinary M. Tech Course in Surface Science and Engineering with specialization in Corrosion and Science of Surface Coatings. The other areas of specialization being Tribology, Mineral Beneficiation, and Petro-chemical technology. It is open to candidates having B. Tech degree in Engineering or Master degree in Physics or Chemistry. This course has been approved by the Govt. of India (AICTE) to cater the need of industries, research institution, etc. which necessitated a wide spectrum of specialization in corrosion and science of surface coatings.
The course covers surface and interfacial phenomena in general, and physical metallurgy, material science and electrochemistry in particular The second semester offers corrosion and science of surface coating, which covers metallic corrosion, study of kinetics, analysis and characterization of failures of metal and alloys and residual life, corrosion in Chemical, Automotives, Fertilizer, petrochemical and process industries. Methodology of preventive measures such as surface coatings and Paint Technology and Electroplating and Cathodic/ Anodic electrodeposition of polymer (ED coat), Cathodic protection, Anodic protection and the use of inhibitors etc.
The first two semesters thus give the background preparation for the research based thesis work of third and fourth semesters, normally carried out at reputed industries/ R&D Institutions / Laboratories, where the students acquire first hand exposure to state of art technology under practical working condition and the able guidance of experts This rigorous training gives impetus to motivation, potential enrichment and a new outlook on the part of the students.
The M. Tech course thus widens the scope of learning of students in the field of surface Engineering Exposure to practical, industnal & / or R&D facilities make the incumbents competent and ready for contributing to such organizations.
Active participation of engineers, scientists and experts from SAIL, TATA MOTORS, TATA STEEL, Berger Paints, ICI Paints, and CSIR laboratories, viz. NML Jamshedpur, Central Electrochemical Research Institute (Karaikudi.Tamil Nadu), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (Kalpakum, T.N), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (Mumbai) etc, has been the source of strength, inspiration and sustenance of the course, since its inception in 1982.
The students obtaining the degree find prospective openings in reputed industries and research institutions like ISRO, SHAR Centre, IISc. Bangalore, IITs (Mumbai, Kharagpur, Delhi), University of Roorkee, BHU, NML Jamshedpur, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, ND Ispat (Nagpur), Bombay Paints (Delhi), Shalimar Paints (Kolkatta, Nasik), Bajaj Auto Pune, Hero Honda Dharu Hera, MUL Gurgaon, Goodlass & Nerolac Paints Mumbai, Jenson & Nicholson Kolkatta, ICI Paints Hyderabad, Asian Paints, Majestic Auto Ludhiana, LML Kanpur, Hyundai Tamil Nadu, MRL Chennai, Tribology India Chennai, Gulf oil Mumbai, Saboo Beriac Chandigarh, Steel strips wheels Chandigarh, Morsun Mumbai, Sri Ram Piston Delhi, Sakata INX Delhi, Scooter India Lucknow, Kiriosker Brothers Pune, Swaraj Tractors Chandigarh etc. |
