National Institute of Technology at Jamshedpur which was born as Regional Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, was established by the Government of India and the Government of Bihar as a joint venture in 1960 with the aim to generate technical graduates of highest standards who could provide technological leadership to the region. The foundation stone of this institute was laid on 15th August, 1960 at Adityapur.

RIT was upgraded to National Institute of Technology on 27th December, 2002, with the status of a deemed university. It is now totally under the control of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, New Delhi since 1st April, 2003.

The Institute, with 115 faculty, 1350 students, 300 administrative and supporting staff, is a self-contained campus. It is located on the outskirts of Jamshedpur on 320 acres of sprawling, rolling hilly, wooded land. It combines natural beauty of countryside with urban glamour of an industrial area. The flowing river and picturesque backdrop of low hills on one side and large tracks of forest on the other make the 320 acres of rolling campus an ideal place for higher learning and research. It has been growing from strength to strength ever since it was established in 1960.

The Institute has several departments in various disciplines of engineering and the pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organized on a unique pattern of functioning.

The D-day for RIT, Jamshedpur was 27th December, 2002 when it was formally upgraded to National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur with the Deemed University status.

The institute is poised for bright and promising future. The annual system of the curricula has been changed to semester system. The courses have been completely restructured and prepared as per the needs of society and industries.

There is refreshing development on every front. The institute has achieved impressive placement for its students, with top industrial houses and software companies recruiting the students in a big way. The campus is in the process of receiving a complete face-lift. Academic and administrative buildings, the halls of residence, and staff quarters are being renovated and roads widened. New parks and gardens are giving the institute a new look. The fully renovated Guest House, new faculty houses, a new 300 seated boys' hostel and students' gymkhana buildings are expected to become functional shortly.

The library has been shifted to a new building and it is going to be a state-of-the-art digital library with almost all library functions completely automated.

The Computer Centre has over 200 computers with 2 Mbps (raw) connectivity. The high-speed campus LAN which will connect all departments/centers in the first phase is being implemented. The LAN will also support on line access to digital library right to the edge level.

The dream to make NIT, Jamshedpur a benchmark institution is well on the way to becoming a reality.
