The student's body, which comprises the true wealth of the institute, draws 50% of its strength from the home state and 50% from the entire country. Thus the institute provides a common meeting ground for students from every state. At the institute, we enjoy a glorious glimpse of national integration truly at work. The institute becomes a melting pot where students can shed all individual shades and differences and unite to form a composite body that can be identified as truly Indian.

The students get off to a colorful start with an impressive program during freshers' introduction. The ingenuity and creativity of the students are evident in the way the function is organized and conducted by them.

The student community at NIT Jamshedpur is vibrantly alive. Their excitement and exuberance find outlets in the activities of various clubs such as the Cultural and Dramatic society, the Literary and Debating society, the Fine Arts club, the Engineers Adventure club, the Rotaract club, Amateur Electronic society, NSS, and many others. Each club works under the able guidance of one faculty member. A variety of activities are organized by these clubs in each academic year.

Students also participate in various activities arranged by other institutes of the country and many a time our students have won prizes and secured excellent positions placing the institute on top. A national level cultural and literary extravaganza UTKARSH is organized during feb-march every year, in which students from out station colleges also participate. The 3-day function draws.Excellent response from the visitors who come from far and wide. Such programmes provide a great opportunity to showcase the talents of the students and provide a forum for interaction and exchange of ideas among the students and faculty in a spirit of camaraderie.

The society of Metallurgical Engineering students organizes a National Level Technical paper presentation, Metallographic contest, invited lectures by eminent metallurgists, and Dr. Dara P.
